REVIEW | 9 To 5 - The Musical, UK Tour - Peterborough New Theatre

On Wednesday night I joined the Peterborough audience and walked into New Theatre Peterborough on a hot and humid summer's evening. I was ready to watch 9 to 5 the Musical and admittedly, I wasn't too sure what to expect. I assumed we would hear the iconic songs I already knew, but aside from that I was unsure what was coming. I often like to go into musicals with limited knowledge so I am captivated as soon as it starts, and I most definitely was hooked and engaged throughout. 9 to 5 the Musical exceeded all of my expectations and has already become one of my new favourite musicals of all time.
Based on the 1980s comedy film also coined 9 to 5, the musical explores the perfect mix of comedy and drama whilst discussing social issues with realism. 9 to 5 is packed with catchy songs, hilarious comedic lines and themes which are relatable to many audience members, including myself as a woman who has navigated workplace dynamics, inequalities and sexism within society.
9 to 5 the Musical explores themes of combating inequality in the workplace, including sexism and discrimination which women face. Whilst this reflects the backdrop of it's era, it feels as relevant and contemporary today in 2026. The friendships and connections formed by Violet, Doralee and Judy are lovely to see, encouraging women to work together to achieve a goal instead of against each other. In a society that tends to put women against one another and encourages rivalry, the women in 9 to 5 are stronger and closer than ever, with the aim to collaborate and advocate for equality.
Jade Marvin who played Violet, Karla Tracey who played Doralee and Kayla Carter who played Judy have a bond that works impeccably well, the comedy and friendship balance is perfect as a trio. All three cast members delivered stellar performances and powerhouse vocals, with songs which will stay with me forever. Throughout the musical I felt myself reflecting on my own life, experiences and friendships as a young woman, showcasing the raw emotion, talent and comedy delivered by the cast.
A particular moment which stood out to me was Violet's (Marvin) journey to success as she broke the glass ceiling to become CEO. Violet is constantly overlooked for being a woman, but she quickly asserts her worth through bringing in policies which encourage an equal workplace, such as equal pay and flexible working. This message represents the importance of allowing women to use their voice and be activists against gender inequalities in society. As a young woman I felt inspired to work hard, stand up for what I believe in and believe in myself and my talents, due to Violet who was portrayed incredibly well by Jade Marvin. This musical encourages a generation of young women to believe in themselves, celebrating resilience, determination and the power of female friendship. 9 to 5 encourages the audience to engage in activism and make changes in society and the workplace - which we need now more than ever.
The comedy was absolutely hilarious and weaved into the themes of the show perfectly. Each character bounced off one another to create comedic timing which had me laughing out loud throughout. In particular Jessica Martin who portrayed Roz, had the audience in stitches throughout and deserves appreciation for her performance.
Paul Jepson, the director of 9 to 5 the Musical and CEO & Creative Director of Landmark Theatres, aimed to showcase this musical in Peterborough, to give audiences who tend to lack cultural engagement the opportunity to view theatre locally in Peterborough. As someone who has lived and grown up in the area and is passionate about combating inequalities in access to arts and cultural spaces, I was pleased to hear the national funding from Arts Council England allowed 9 to 5 to grace our stage in Peterborough. For many of us who live in Peterborough and experience class and wealth inequalities, attending theatre in cultural cities like London is expensive and unattainable. Having the opportunity to access large-scale productions such as 9 to 5 in a city like Peterborough is so important to audience members who may not get the opportunity to do so if it wasn’t for touring productions. Therefore, the importance of 9 to 5 due to it's themes and messaging, particularly for Peterborough communities, felt extremely relevant and poignant. I felt extremely proud to be a local Peterborough theatre-attendee, as I sat in the audience surrounded by others who were as appreciative as myself to be part of the experience. Walking out of the theatre, there was a buzz and excitement as I heard the audience reflect on how brilliant 9 to 5 was.
9 to 5 the Musical is embarking on a tour around the UK. It remains in Peterborough this week before embarking to Barnstaple, Blackpool, Guildford and elsewhere. 9 to 5 is not one to be missed - it will have you laughing, crying, reflecting on your life and leaving wanting to go back and see it again and again.
